Interview

By Down In Sound
With Brandon
On 2005

Who are you and what do you do in the band?
I'm Brandon and I play Guitar in I Am The Avalanche.

We all know Vinnie's from the Movielife, but what musical backgrounds do you all come from?
A couple of years ago, I played for a band called Further Seems Forever for like 2 years, then I was in some, like smaller local bands when I was growing up in Minnesota.

How would you describe the band's sound for those who haven't heard you?
I dunno, I guess rock, well, if you could take Weezer and not make 'em as quirky and made it heavier, then I guess we might make it into that genre!

Your first shows were over here in the UK, how did you find them?
They were amazing, seriously, we were actually really excited to have our first show over here, just because every time I've been here with my old band's, the kid's have always been really accepting and into the music. Yeah, it was really fun, we played two shows, one at the Kingston Peel and one at Killy's Rockworld in Manchester and the show's were pretty wild, we had some UK bands opening the shows like Echofreddy, I don't know if you know those guys or not, but it was like a big party, it was really fun!

Would you have preffered to play your first shows in America?
Err, it woulda been cool, ya know, but I thought it was just really cool that we could come out here and do it.

What's it like on Drive Thru Records?
It's great so far, we just signed a couple of months ago. Richard and Stefanie (Reines) have been really good to us, like helping us out and stuff, and we just got our record done and that should be coming out in September 27th, so DTR's good!

Any album names or tentative titles yet?
We actually don't know quite yet, we're thinking... Actually, I have no idea!

Is the sound of the album what you'd been expecting?
Oh yeah! We used this guy, Garrett Jones, he's a producer and he did like, some really early Nirvana stuff and Foo Fighters and we just loved all the stuff that he did. So we went to Seattle and totally had the 'Seattle vibe', it was really good, and it came out exactly how I would've dreamed it to come out.

This tour, doing it for like 3 weeks, how's it been so far?
Amazing, we've been sharing a bus with Halifax and we'd never met them before this tour and we've became really really good friends with them and they're like our brothers now.

It doesn't get too claustrophobic with the two bands?
No, there's obviously a lotta people, but it's cool, ya know what I mean, everybody has a good attitude and there's not like that one person who's gonna bum everyone out!

Do you have any future plans to return over here? Festivals, etc?
Er, yeah, actually, we're sure that after our record comes out we're gonna be over here and also touring the States as well.

Are there any American bands you can recommend to the Down In Sound users?
Erm, sorta, ones that haven't made it over here yet?

Yeah!
Erm, I'm trying to think, my friends are in a band called Neamya, they're from Minnesota, they play metal and I think they're really, really awesome! They kinda sound like At The Gates and stuff. Very good stuff. *looks to Halifax* You guys got any cool bands? Cartel... The Higher too!

Last question, if your band could be a superhero, which would it be?
Oh man... erm... you guys might have to give me a minute to think about it. Like existing heroes or a made up one?

Whatever man, you can make one up!
OK, erm, well, I guess it would just be this, erm, big, looking Nordic guy, a Viking kinda guy definately wearing blue Speedos, erm, smokes always gotta steaming from his nose ya know like a Dragon or something like that, then I guess this special little thing, kinda cheesy, but I guess it'd have to have something to do with snow like an avalanche or something.

Thank you very much!
No problem guys, thank you!
